Day 18 – Salta to Cafayate

Our 10 am departure occurred promptly at 7:30 but was well worth while as we were being escorted by the local police to the local track. Before we get into the day’s events, we discovered a beautiful little park right across the street from the hotel. Salta is a large city way beyond the standards we have become accustomed to.

This lovely home was located right next to the Sheraton where we were staying – go figure …

Imagine a 25 vintage car procession through a major city at rush hour – good thing we had a police escort!!!

A beautiful and impressive building in downtown Salta – I have no idea what it was – perhaps someone in the audience knows …

We began to wonder what kind of track we were going to – these horses greeted us at the gate – love the little colt …

Typical mob scene before the start of anything, especially automotive events …

This was our police escort – they look just like the “motors” on the Colorado Grade or the Copperstate 1000 … Thanks guys for a great job.

Some of the European contingent BEFORE the race – they even brought their own trophy.

That is Karen Hope flagging off the Austin #2 – careful, don’t run Simon, he has to last to the end of the event.

Some shots of the first turn – I’ll not compress them but you can figure out who they are on your own (clue – they are all low numbered cars who precede us in the start).

Bentley …

Model A …

Plymouth …

Lagonda (my favorite) …

Not everyone started out exactly the same way – never lift on a 356 …

Racing done, back to the real world – tractors right on the road reminiscent of the “Stans” on Peking to Paris.

Back to the mountains – this time with foliage …

On to the second Test of the day – this one 65 km through the mountains …

These mountains were truly red – just beautiful …

A little bit of straight road – not some we saw a lot of on this test …

Arriving at Cafayete we were greeted by this wonderful 19th century hotel and winery – now we are talking about first class / five stars – this is the Patios de Cafayate …

This is the back of this lovely villa – that is the swimming pool in the lower left corner.

Entering the hotel, one little courtyard after another …

Beautiful …

Yet another of these beautiful places – rooms all around.

One of the dining rooms …

The lobby …

One of the full time staff – looks pretty comfortable sitting there …

What is better than a Llama? Two Llamas of course …

Looks like there were two hams in this picture – the one on the left looks much smarter than the other (at least kinder).

Poor Llama – looking for a room for the night …

We are all looking for friends when in faraway places …

And I’m sure I found a friend, this guy came right up and kissed me on the chin – be assured, I was worried about being spat upon but what an experience. I’m sure this is a trained Llama, employed by the hotel for big bucks to smooze the guests but I regard myself as lucky to have shared in this major bonus.

We ended this fantastic day with a wonderful barbeque and Flamenco dancers putting on a great show. How much better does it get?

Until tomorrow …
